My ducks are growing so fast I had to buy them a new(bigger) pool. I have a smaller kiddie pool that has worked in the past but we have never had 15 ducks at a time either! Now the smaller one is just for wading in and this one they can dive a bit and swim under water (in circles).
I am always amazed at how smart these animals are and then I wonder who could have said animals were stupid. I say this because I raised these ducks in a different part of the barn where I store my hay, separate from my chickens and horses up until last week. I wanted to make sure they were old enough to take care of themselves.
Since that time I have had them loose on our property with the chickens and I now keep everyone in the same coop at night next to the horses. Anyhow, it took me one time of hearding them into the chicken coop with my hens for them to go there on their own. Now they put themselves away each night when it starts getting late right along with the hens and all I have to do is shut the door on them for the night and do a quick head count. I must say it’s pretty easy for having natural pest control that will fly away in the fall- as long as you don’t mind the fertilizer they leave behind!
They’re so cute!
We always say that our ducks are really good at being ducks.
I think the problem is when people think animals should be smart in the same way as people are. That’s a pretty stupid thing for some people to think, imho.
Thanks Liz- I would love to get ducks like yours they are so pretty, but my husband says he will refuse to eat duck eggs- he thinks on the lines that eggs only come from chickens, milk and cheese only comes from cows…So, we get mallards to enjoy for the summer, use them as bug control, and in the late fall they are off to start a new life of their own.
