OLS 4 & 4.5
Jul 20th, 2007 by Manerva

The garden continues to grow and provide for us which makes me very happy and yet a bit sad because we are teetering right on the top of a downhill slide. Before we know it fall and then winter will be upon us and the excitement of new seed catalogs coming in the mail will be in front of us yet again for the next planting season.
Gosh, before I get too morbid I will stop and continue with our meal(s) for OLS. I only say meals because I made two very good meals this week that included mostly local ingredients and just couldn’t leave anything out. One meal included the first sweet corn of the year, but I did have a plan for the real OLS meal and I included that as well. Everything in the above picture is from the garden except for the salt, pepper, butter on the corn and beans, and the EVOO that I fried the onions and taters in and it was scrumptious! But, below is the real OLS supper for the week.

Tonight we had the real supper (in husbands opinion) that I had planned for OLS and he was very, very happy because it included MEAT! Smashed potatoes with roasted garlic- from our garden. Beets- from our garden. Meatballs- our half of beef raised 4 miles away stuffed with eggs from the hens, onion from the garden and dried bread crumbs that were home made from my good friend Char (thank you).
Un-local included salt, pepper, butter and possibly Char’s bread ingredients as I don’t know where they came from.
that is so true… the days are getting shorter, no? wah! great meal, i heart beets!!
I’ve been thinking about that downhill slide this week, too–a kind of oh, no feeling. But I reminded myself that it’s still July (barely!), so enjoy it, for heaven’s sake.
Both of those meals look delicious!
My garden has not been a total waste…now that it is raining again, I need to get out and do some work in it.
