Yesterday I was feeling domestic. I took the day off from the soap shop and worked in between the house and garden all day. I did laundry that had been waiting for water, hung loads out to dry in the warm sunshine (My dryer has been unplugged almost a year now) and cleaned a house that has been neglected all summer due to gardens, jobs, and just not wanting to take the time quite honestly. Now I know why…after the house was spotless, especially the kitchen I just made another mess.
My first mess was Pico de Gallo. My large toms are just slowly coming ’round and I could not wait any longer so I used 2 pounds of cherry tomato’s that I picked, along with fresh onion, cilantro, jalapeno peppers, and garlic all from the garden. Non local was the salt & apple cider vinegar.
It was really fresh, although it could have been a bit hotter and husband could have done without the cilantro. We are huge Pico fans here, we could go through a gallon a week if I could make enough I suppose. I especially like it smothering my scrambled eggs in the morning.

The next mess I made was pizza. I have had a craving for it lately so I took the time and made one for our OLS supper. I used Debra Madison’s recipe out of Vegetarian Cooking For Everyone for the crust and it turned out wonderfully!
Ingredients are as follows:
Crust
- Whole wheat & white flour- Milan MN 45 miles
- EVOO- Italy
- Sea Salt-non-local
- Yeast-non-local
Toppings
- Basil Puree- My garden except for the EVOO & Salt
- Tomato sauce- my garden last year
- Onion- garden
- Ground burger- Our local half of beef- 4 or 5 miles away
- Pepperoni- Non local
- Olives- I can not have pizza w/out olives!- Not from here

Wow, Manerva…that looks great!
I am so that way about cleaning. Once I get the kitchen all sparkly, I can’t wait to use it to make something really messy.
I made pizza this week, too–the fresh-from-the-garden sauce was so good that I think I’m going to make a few batches and freeze them for the cold depths of winter.
