Hot off the Hen
Feb 4th, 2008 by Manerva

Every day without fail I have chores to do. With two horses, (one of which I sold yesterday) and 15 chickens I am up and going early because I have babes that are waiting for breakfast. My normal feed times are 7am and 4pm and usually by 6:30am & 3:30 respectively the horses are staring down the house or the soap shop (they watch me like a hawk) and they start calling to let me so I know it’s time. My hens are still a bit groggy when I arrive in the morning but they come alive when they hear the feed bin open up as they gobble up what ever the horses drop.
It’s been snowing all day and even though it was quite warm out this morning I decided to make myself a good breakfast after feeding everyone else. Luckily for me I had fresh eggs right off the chicken this morning or hot off the press if you will.
My hens are very tame and I can sit and pet them while they are working on making or should I say delivering an egg, and as I was loving her up she kind of stood up, squacked, and laid an egg right in my hand. How lucky is that?
I kind of felt bad when I scooped it up as I was thinking ”breakfast” and she was looking under herself wondering where all the hard work had went. Oh, well I ended up with a wonderful breakfast of fried egg on wonderful sour dough bread and then took out the hens a bunch of kitchen scraps for all their hard work.

So, as it stands I have sold Betsy Sweet Showdown (left) and have one more horse to go if I can bare to go through with it. Kassy is my baby, and I have had her the longest so it’s going to be tough! With the drought last summer hay prices are sky high, and the people selling the hay don’t seem to have any qualms with jacking the prices.
I like your new heading! It’s great to have warm eggs. Jessica came in on Sunday, pointing out an egg that had just been laid - was she excited!
Sorry that you are having to sell your horses - wish I could have one!!!
See you this weekend!!
I love chickens, and can’t stop photographing the 9 layers at our organic garden ranch (see eyecontact at Imagekind or Zazzle for reference). I just thought I’d drop a line and say I enjoyed your blog heading and entries. Cluck!
